AC TECHNICIAN

An AC Technician (Air Conditioning Technician) is a skilled professional who installs, maintains, and repairs air conditioning systems. They work with residential, commercial, and industrial HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) units.

Installation of new AC units (split, window, central, etc.)

Routine maintenance – checking refrigerant levels, cleaning filters, coils, etc.

Diagnosing problems like strange noises, leaks, electrical faults.

Repairing components – compressors, motors, thermostats, etc.

Handling refrigerants safely and in line with environmental regulations.

Reading wiring diagrams and blueprints.

Skills Needed

  • Good understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of refrigerants and safety practices.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and diagrams.

Tools of the Trade

  • Manifold gauge set – measures refrigerant pressure.
  • Vacuum pump – removes moisture from lines before charging.
  • Refrigerant recovery machine – collects refrigerant safely.
  • Multimeter – checks electrical circuits.
  • Leak detector, thermometers, drill, wrenches, and more.

Safety and Certifications

  • Must know how to handle refrigerants (like R-22, R-410A) safely.
  • In many places, technicians need EPA Certification or local equivalents.
  • Protective gear includes gloves, goggles, and sometimes respirators.
